Building our Retirement Timber Frame Home

Building our Retirement Timber Frame Home

Stories in Wood

We invite you to join us on our journey of building our retirement timber frame home — an arch‑chord king post design thoughtfully crafted for the next chapter of our lives.

Nestled in the quiet countryside of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, it’s where we plan (or at least hope) to age in place with single floor living and other subtle accommodation elements.

About Us

Angie and Craig_edited.jpg

We are Craig and Angie Long.  Craig is a retired meterologist and Angie is a semi-retired public health professional.  Our passion for timber frame homes began in 1990, inspired by This Old House and the craftsmanship of modern timber framer Ted Benson. That early spark led us to build our first timber frame home in 2002, Timber Springs, in West Friendship, Maryland — a home we designed, shepherded through a complex approval process, and filled with family life for two decades.  After career changes, a cross‑country move to Oregon, and eventually selling Timber Springs in 2021, we promised each other we would one day build another.

In 2024, with Angie's retirement from the University of Oregon on the horizon, we found the perfect setting in Conestoga, Pennsylvania — a wooded 1.74‑acre lot just outside Lancaster, not too far from Craig’s hometown (Sinking Spring, Pa). Partnering again with Lancaster County Timber Frames and finding Hess Home Builders through LCTF,  we did the site engineering and preparation throughout 2025.

Our blog now follows the journey of building our retirement timber frame home, beginning with Craig’s "repositioning" trip from Eugene to Lancaster in March 2026 and the official groundbreaking on March 17.

Our blog explores the story of building our timber frame home in rural Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
